SMB deployment.  When underwater a surface marker buoy is the only means by which a diver can communicate with the surface.  It provides surface support with a means of tracking a divers position and allows the diver to communicate that all is well.  To successfully deploy an SMB a diver must manage expanding air and line underwater.  If poorly controlled this can quickly lead to an unsafe situation or uncontrolled ascent.  Therefore, safe and effective deployment of an SMB is an essential safety skill in open water diving.

As with all skills the SMB deployment is best practiced on dry land before attempting it in water.  This allows feedback to be provided and for the mechanics of the skill to be understood whilst the diver isn’t concerned with the additional task loading of being underwater.
